Regional Carbon Projects Director

Acre is proud to be partnering with Eden: People +Planet, a non-profit focused on large-scale landscape restoration projects, who are in search of a Regional Carbon Projects Director to be based at their Nairobi, Kenya office.

As they grow their portfolio of carbon projects, they are seeking a Regional Carbon Projects Director. The person will be overseeing the design, implementation, and operation of landscape restoration projects and carbon projects across various locations in the Africa/Asia Region in conjunction with country teams.

 

 

This position requires dynamic leadership, exceptional project management skills, and a deep commitment to community engagement and environmental management. The role is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced, well-rounded carbon project professional to join a high integrity, purpose-led team within a vertically integrated carbon project developer.

 

 

What you will do:

  • Develop and design carbon project development processes in alignment with Eden's global objectives and local context to maximize impact.

  • Identify opportunities for innovation and expansion of Eden's programs in Africa and Asia.

  • Support country teams in ensuring timely and effective delivery of Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation (ARR) and REDD+ initiatives in collaboration with the country offices. Ensure compliance with relevant environmental regulations, international Standards, best practices and project-specific requirements.

  • Coordinate with project teams to ensure adherence to carbon project timelines, outputs, budgets, and quality standards.

  • In conjunction with country teams, technical teams and project leads, design and implement effective efforts to engage with local communities and stakeholders to build trust, foster collaboration, and ensure their meaningful participation in project planning and decision-making.

  • Support country directors in cultivating and maintaining strong partnerships with government agencies, NGOs, community-based organizations, and other relevant stakeholders to leverage resources and maximize impact.

 

 

Who you are:

  • Strong understanding of landscape restoration principles, including ARR and REDD+ and direct implementation experience of successful carbon projects.

  • Has an interpersonal style that engages others from various cultural contexts and encourages trust.

  • Energetic, flexible, and collaborative; a team leader who can positively and productively impact both strategic and tactical initiatives; can nimbly learn and adapt based on experience and evidence.

  • A firm understanding of local customary practices and community engagement processes in natural resource management and restoration.

  • Fluency in English is required, andproficiency in Kiswahili or other local/regional languages preferred.

  • This role requires regular travel to project sites up to 30% of the time, which often involves rugged terrain, so flexibility and overall mobility to travel to these sites are required.

 

 

The role requires the job holder to have existing rights to live and work in Kenya.

Primary objectives of this role include the following:

 

  • Serve as Lead for Circularity Compliance Reporting and Document Management to enable client compliance with product and packaging obligations.

  • Manage the alignment of Global strategy and US market requirements for compliance reporting, to meet client needs.

  • Lead key partner collaboration, including internal, client, Suppliers to achieve objectives.

  • Collaboratively develop technical and governance processes to enable compliance with reporting and document management requirements for packaging and products.

  • Monitor and compile the reporting and documentation compliance obligations (including, e.g., data, methodologies and definitions) impacting client packaging and products in the US.

  • Assess business impact and communicate the product packaging compliance regulations/requirements (upcoming or changing) based on jurisdiction and packaging/product material in scope.

  • Identify and recommend options to achieve compliance and mitigate identified risks as they relate to regulatory compliance.

  • Implement, coordinate and maintain businesses processes to comply with regulatory reporting and document management requirements, including report set ups, data analytics and data management.

  • Create and maintain standard operating procedures for the timely audit of compliance and reporting of required information and documentation.

  • Regularly report to management on efforts to maintain reporting and document management compliance for packaging and products.

  • Drive continuous improvement of reporting and document compliance business practices to deliver results effectively and efficiently, including product packaging standards, guidance, and database.

  • Define and develop a strategic compliance plan related to emerging packaging and product regulations impacting reporting and document management.

  • Develop and implement training/awareness plan related to reporting and document management compliance and business impacts for different internal partners.

  • Manage external consultants on reporting and document management regulatory compliance.

  • Advise on topics pertaining to regulatory compliance requirements e.g., software subscription designed to comply with regulatory reporting and document management.

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current and future reporting and document management regulatory compliance, through trade associations, external committees, regular review of relevant publications and subscription services, and interactions with external experts and advisors.

  • Work on ad-hoc projects and duties as required by management.

 

Required Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor's Degree in environmental policy, economics, sustainability management or a related field

  • 8+ years of relevant professional experience preferred in regulatory affairs, and compliance.

  • Demonstrated ability to read, interpret and operationalize product and chemical sustainability regulations.

  • Knowledge and experience managing compliance with product regulatory and/or emerging corporate sustainability regulations, through reporting, document and database management, audit management, and other relevant aspects

  • Knowledge and experience managing processes and disclosures related to product sustainability attributes and impacts, such as Life-cycle Assessments (LCAs), Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs),

  • Proficiency in coordinating Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) requirements and sustainability reporting

  • Evidence of strategy development for company product compliance.

  • Experience managing cross-functional teams, including consultants, to achieve objectives

  • Client management expertise with a high level of articulation around relevant topics (regulatory compliance).

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Understanding of Extended Producer Responsibility regulations, andenvironmental packaging policies.

  • Strong project management skills; capable of planning, organizing details
