Minerals and metals are essential for modern living. Among other things, they enable farming, healthcare, communications, water and energy supply, transport, space technology and the construction of our cities.
Investments in natural resources do not always lead to positive social and economic outcomes for human wellbeing, our planet, or the prosperity of host communities and nations. This does not have to be the case; when mining and metals companies act responsibly, the extraction and management of natural resources can be transformative for the lives of employees, their families, local communities and entire nations.
Bringing together 27 mining and metals company members and over 35 national, regional and commodity association members, ICMM has a truly global reach, and uses this platform to strengthen the social and environmental performance of the mining and metals industry while building recognition of its contribution to local communities and society at large.
About this role:
We are looking for a passionate and experienced environmental/engineering practitioner with a strong background in technical environmental issues. You will lead the ICMM's work with its members to support their implementation of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM), helping them deliver on the requirements of the GISTM and engage with key stakeholders, including those responsible for the development of a Global Tailings Management Institute (GTMI). In addition, you will support important work in other technical areas, notably to support members on implementing the commitments in ICMM's 2021 Climate Change Position Statement.
You will have the opportunity to:
Lead engagement and collaboration between members to share their practical experiences of implementing the GISTM in several performance areas, and produce updates on implementation at major milestones (e.g. August 2023/2025)
Convene annual face-to-face member meetings (in addition to regular virtual sessions) to foster relationships/collaboration and share implementation experiences
Organise ad hoc technical sessions with external experts (e.g. monitoring solutions providers /consultants) and members to share approaches/challenges
Continue collaboration with current and future tailings management course providers to influence content and to extend the reach of ICMM guidance materials, as well as expanding ICMMs training material to include conformance protocols (for operators and auditors)
Develop further tools/resources to help support GISTM implementation in collaboration with other ICMM working groups
Sustain ICMM's engagement with the GTMI and participation of ICMM nominated representatives on advisory panel/working groups
Develop external relationships and partnerships to build awareness of and champion improved tailings management performance in the wider industry
Work closely with colleagues from policy and communications to track developments in the policy space and develop messaging and communications that help position ICMM members nature-related performance
Measure and monitor the progress of project delivery
You will also be a key member of the climate change project team which works to support members with implementing the commitments of the 2021 position statement, and supporting ICMM's work on responsible sourcing.
About you:
You will share ICMM's passion for sustainability, have 5+ years' experience working on technical environmental issues, ideally within a consultancy, company, government, civil society or association.
You have a good working knowledge of the global policy environment related to tailings management, climate change or broader environmental issues. Ideally, you will have knowledge of the extractives industry and experience working in or with corporate businesses across technical environmental areas.
You will also be adaptable, creative and a strategic thinker who can move from planning to implementation with ease. A strong team player and influencer, you will have excellent interpersonal, communication and engagement skills, with the ability to build, maintain and leverage relationships both internally and across multiple external stakeholder groups.
Have we piqued your interest?
ICMM's approach is anchored in collaboration, bringing together industry and broader stakeholders such as investors, suppliers, communities, Indigenous Peoples, academia, and civil society to achieve their vision of a safe, just and sustainable world, enabled by responsibly produced minerals and metals.
