Minerals and metals are essential for modern living. Among other things, they enable farming, healthcare, communications, water and energy supply, transport, space technology and the construction of our cities.
Investments in natural resources do not always lead to positive social and economic outcomes for human wellbeing, our planet, or the prosperity of host communities and nations. This does not have to be the case; when mining and metals companies act responsibly, the extraction and management of natural resources can be transformative for the lives of employees, their families, local communities and entire nations.
Bringing together 27 mining and metals company members and over 35 national, regional and commodity association members, ICMM has a truly global reach, and uses this platform to strengthen the social and environmental performance of the mining and metals industry while building recognition of its contribution to local communities and society at large.
About this role:
We are looking for a passionate and experienced social practitioner with a strong background in community engagement and development - particularly in relation to Indigenous Peoples, artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) - to lead ICMM's work in these two areas. You will also help lead the work on community resilience and skills, and support the delivery of ICMM's human rights project.
ICMM's project on Indigenous Peoples and Human Rights is organised in two, inter-related tracks - on Indigenous Peoples and Human Rights, respectively. Leading the Indigenous Peoples track, you will work with members and other stakeholders to re-establish a leadership position on engagement with Indigenous Peoples and use that to shape international policy and discourse informed by ICMM members' contribution on this topic. Leading a project team of three colleagues and a communications partner, you will be responsible for the implementation of ICMM's Indigenous Peoples project.
You will have the opportunity to:
Lead and/or support engagement and collaboration with members and external stakeholders to assess the need for updated member commitments on Indigenous Peoples
Lead and/or support dialogue and partnership development with Indigenous Peoples and organisations to rebuild trust over time and improve performance
Facilitate workshops, peer-to-peer exchange and multi-stakeholder forums to strengthen performance on engagement with Indigenous Peoples
Oversee the development of research, technical guidance, practical tools and resources to improve Indigenous Peoples performance and disclosure
Develop external relationships and partnerships to influence policy developments to strengthen respect for Indigenous Peoples
Work closely with colleagues from policy and communications to track developments in the policy space and develop messaging and communications that help position ICMM members Indigenous Peoples-related performance
Measure and monitor the progress of project delivery
Working within ICMM's matrix structure, you will have the opportunity to actively engage in other aspects of the broader ICMM work programme, applying your unique experience and expertise to strengthen the industry's contribution to the sustainable development agenda.
About you:
You will share ICMM's passion for sustainability and have 5+ years' experience working on Indigenous Peoples engagement, ASM, and issues related to land management and community engagement, ideally within a consultancy, company, government, civil society or association.
You have a good working knowledge of the global policy environment related to these areas, and a strong stakeholder network. Ideally, you will have knowledge of the extractives industry and experience working in or with corporate business across the areas of Indigenous Peoples, ASM, community resilience, skills-training, sustainability and/or international development.
You will also be adaptable, creative and a strategic thinker who can move from planning to implementation with ease. A strong team player and influencer, you will have excellent interpersonal, communication and engagement skills, with the ability to build, maintain and leverage relationships both internally and across multiple external stakeholder groups.
Have we piqued your interest?
ICMM's approach is anchored in collaboration, bringing together industry and broader stakeholders such as investors, suppliers, communities, Indigenous Peoples, academia, and civil society to achieve their vision of a safe, just and sustainable world, enabled by responsibly produced minerals and metals.
