Minerals and metals are essential for modern living. Among other things, they enable farming, healthcare, communications, water and energy supply, transport, space technology and the construction of our cities.
Investments in natural resources do not always lead to positive social and economic outcomes for human wellbeing, our planet, or the prosperity of host communities and nations. This does not have to be the case; when mining and metals companies act responsibly, the extraction and management of natural resources can be transformative for the lives of employees, their families, local communities and entire nations.
Bringing together 27 mining and metals company members and over 35 national, regional and commodity association members, ICMM has a truly global reach, and uses this platform to strengthen the social and environmental performance of the mining and metals industry while building recognition of its contribution to local communities and society at large.
About this role:
We are looking for a passionate and experienced social practitioner with a strong background in diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) to lead ICMM's work on DE&I, and to help lead their work on Indigenous People and Human Rights. You will work with members to strengthen their DE&I performance and to chart a leadership role for mining to play in supporting the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goal on Gender Equality, as well as other DE&I objectives both within mining and in the communities and countries which mining impacts.
As the team's DE&I lead, you will be responsible for the implementation of ICMM's DE&I project, leading engagement and collaboration with members and external stakeholders to establish a collective leadership position on DE&I for ICMM.
You will have the opportunity to:
Facilitate workshops, peer-to-peer exchange and multi-stakeholder forums to identify opportunities to strengthen DE&I in the activities of the mining and metals industry
Oversee the development of research, technical guidance, practical tools and resources to improve DE&I performance and disclosure
Engage key stakeholders to scope and develop a clear leadership role for the industry in supporting the achievement of DE&I ambitions, including through the establishment of a 'Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Champions Group' of mining and non-mining stakeholders to provide advice and monitor progress
Develop external relationships and partnerships to build awareness and champion improved performance in the wider sector and value chain
Work closely with colleagues from policy and communications to track developments in the policy space and develop messaging and communications that help position ICMM members' DE&I-related performance
Measure and monitor the progress of project delivery
Working within ICMM's matrix structure, you will have the opportunity to actively engage in other aspects of the broader ICMM work programme, applying your unique experience and expertise to strengthen the industry's contribution to the sustainable development agenda.
About you:
You will share ICMM's passion for sustainability, have strong experience working in DE&I, organisational culture and change management, and increasing business respect for human rights - including those of Indigenous Peoples, ideally within a consultancy, company, government, civil society or association.
You will have a good working knowledge of the extractives industry and experience working in or with corporate business across the areas of DE&I, tax, sustainability and international development.
You will also be adaptable, creative and a strategic thinker who can move from planning to implementation with ease. A strong team player and influencer, you will have excellent interpersonal, communication and engagement skills, with the ability to build, maintain and leverage relationships both internally and across multiple external stakeholder groups.
Have we piqued your interest?
ICMM's approach is anchored in collaboration, bringing together industry and broader stakeholders such as investors, suppliers, communities, Indigenous Peoples, academia, and civil society to achieve their vision of a safe, just and sustainable world, enabled by responsibly produced minerals and metals.
Apply below if you're motivated by the thought of helping ICMM continue to drive real, meaningful change in the metals and mining industry. If you have any questions, please contact samantha.calvey@acre.com.
This role, and all roles at ICMM, are open to candidates from any and all geographic regions.
