United Utilities is responsible for water and wastewater services in the North West of England, and are part of the fabric of daily life for 7.4 million people. Their sole purpose is to provide great water for a stronger, greener and healthier North West.

Sustainability is a core value at United Utilities, and they have progressive targets and initiatives underway when it comes to carbon, and maintaining 100% renewable energy use, scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions reduction, and encouraging their supply chain to set their own SBTs. United Utilities is now seeking to strengthen their initiatives further with the hire of a Carbon Strategy Development Manager.

In this role, you will be delivering across a range of topics including developing the strategy for climate mitigation, long-term plans to net zero, and overall service delivery.

You'll also be:

  • Communicating the climate change ambitions and commitments to the wider organisation, to ensure they are embedded as much as possible, wherever possible. Externally, you will represent United Utilities as you work with regulators and other stakeholder groups on relevant commitments and future policy influence.

  • Developing a horizon scanning practice alongside the Carbon Technical Specialist Manager to keep the initiatives up to speed with the latest market trends and legislation, and to continue positioning United Utilities as a sustainable market leader.

  • Having a data-oriented approach to your project management, tracking, and communicating on progress, but also driving accountability on environmental topics.

United Utilities collaborates closely with a range of partners and stakeholders: communities, customers, employees, environment, investors, and suppliers to create value and shared purpose. With a multi-faceted approach to business, the same applies to carbon and wider sustainability.

To thrive in this role, you enjoy working with others, and engaging a range of audiences about the incredible work underway.

You'll also benefit from having the following:

  • Proven experience in managing a decarbonisation and GHG reduction agenda, from GHG emissions tracking to stakeholder engagement, and feeding carbon into a business strategy. You also know how to tweak and adjust a strategy based on strategic priorities and needs of the business and several stakeholders.

  • Strong project management experience, you know how to plan, deliver, and operationalise the stages of a decarbonisation strategy as required. You bring people along the journey with you and enjoy seeing work managed through to completion.

  • A genuine passion to improve a sector and organisation that is essential for so many, but also to make the planet safer and better as a result. If you have experience working in the infrastructure, water, and utilities sector, this is a bonus.

Does this sound like you? If you are confident, you have relevant skills and experience, but are not convinced you 'tick every box' please do still apply, as United Utilities values upskilling and having an open approach to finding the right person rather than 'the perfect candidate'.

This role offers a flexible working approach and hybrid model, with the HQ being in Warrington.
