Position Summary

The VP, Head of Sustainability will lead the development and implementation of strategies to advance Alterra Mountain Company's environmental sustainability goals. This position reports to the Chief Legal & Social Responsibility Officer/EVP, has one direct report, and is based in Denver, Colorado.

General Responsibilities

  • Develop a forward-thinking corporate sustainability program aligned with industry objectives.

  • Execute and assess a multi-year sustainability strategic plan in collaboration with various departments.

  • Advocate for sustainability policies at local, regional, state, and federal levels.

  • Research and apply best practices to establish consistent sustainability metrics, reporting quarterly and annually to Executive Leadership.

  • Provide guidance on company policies and procedures.

  • Consult with Denver and Resort Divisions to integrate sustainability initiatives.

  • Collaborate with the Social Responsibility team to foster professional development.

  • Address sustainability issues related to corporate philanthropy, employee relations, and other functions.

  • Lead the sustainability team and implement effective communication strategies.

  • Set guidelines and benchmarks for environmental impact and SBTi goals.

  • Create a strategy to procure 100% renewable electricity in alignment with RE100.

  • Ensure compliance with state and federal environmental regulations and stay updated on relevant policies.

  • Manage the budget for sustainability initiatives.

  • Serve as an inclusive and innovative leader, inspiring best practices in sustainability.

  • Passion for the outdoor/ski industry is a plus.

  • Travel as needed to fulfil responsibilities.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • 10-15 years of relevant experience in a high-performance environment, including 3 years in people management.

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies, Business, Public Policy, or related field; Master's degree and professional certifications (LEED, FSA/SASB, GRI, WELL, etc.) preferred.

  • Proven track record in corporate sustainability leadership and program development.

  • Experience building and leveraging relationships with consultants and partners.

  • Technical expertise in carbon reporting and reduction strategies, including corporate certification programs (GHG Protocol, CDP, GRI, SASB, B-Corp, SBTi).

  • Familiarity with energy efficiency programs, carbon offset purchases, sustainable investments, and green infrastructure.

  • Experience managing complex business systems and participating in employee resource groups.

  • Ability to articulate sustainability strategies to stakeholders, including executives and community leaders.

  • Experience in financial and budgeting duties, corporate social responsibility, renewable energy procurement, and internal carbon pricing.
