BACKGROUND

Ocean Generation is an environmental charity endorsed by UNESCO for the way we translate complex Ocean science into engaging content, programmes and actions. Quite simply, we aim to bring the Ocean to everyone, everywhere!

Established in 2009 by filmmaker Jo Ruxton MBE to create the award-winning film "A Plastic Ocean", Ocean Generation has gone on to engage with millions of people all over the world about the importance of our Ocean and empowering them to live more sustainably.

In this UN Decade of Ocean Science, we aim to impact 50 million people by 2030. In 2023 alone, we reached 6.2 million people through our work, of whom 4.1 million actively engaged in our content or took part in educational activities with us. We reached 497,250 young people through one of our three flagship youth programmes last year and we are well set to massively improve on that total this year.

Ocean Generation is working in partnership with Acre to hire a General Manager who can lead this dynamic charity into its next phase of growth in the second half of the UN Ocean Decade.

YOUR BACKGROUND

Whilst ideally you would have some experience in marine science or conservation this is not essential. However, you must demonstrate a passion for the natural world.

You will also demonstrate the following:

Leadership

  • A strong and appealing leadership identity that your team will engage with positively along with proven experience of leading and developing small teams.

  • The aptitude to partner with the board in providing a transparent operating environment.

Strategy and business growth

  • Proven experience in developing and executing strategy in a charity or business which has generated a tangible positive impact.

  • A natural networker, with an existing network; a clear track record of success in charitable fund-raising or business sales.

Charitable Impact

The demonstrable ability to support, challenge and lead teams to achieve measurable successes in the following areas:

  • The translation of peer-reviewed marine science into simple and engaging content.

  • Digital communications, PR, marketing and brand building.

  • Campaign and movement building.

  • The development and delivery of engaging educational programmes for all ages.

Strong operational capabilities

  • Hands-on experience of practical operational responsibility for a small business or business unit.

  • Clear evidence of financial planning, reporting and cash flow monitoring.

  • Rounded business experience enabling you to lead and take practical, informed decisions on all business operational areas including HR, IT, Data, Legal, Compliance and Governance.

SALARY

Ocean Generation is a mid-size charity with 11 regular employees and an annual income that has averaged just over £500,000 per year. Hence we are currently able to offer a salary in the range of £50-60,000 plus a variable reward opportunity. We do however have ambitious plans and with impact growing rapidly we are preparing to scale up. The new leader will be instrumental to that growth and therefore we expect the salary to grow commensurate with the success of the organisation.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES

Ocean Generation and Acre are committed to increasing diversity and maintaining a progressive and inclusive workplace, both for us and for the organisations we support. It is important to us that we offer equal opportunities in the recruitment processes that we run. We welcome applications from all qualified candidates regardless of their ethnicity, race, gender, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, age, marital status or whether they have a disability. If you require additional equipment, resources, or support to participate in the job application or interview process, please let us know and we will work with you to ensure that your accessibility needs are met.

LOCATION

Ocean Generation operates on a home-working basis with occasional team meetings, therefore the successful candidate can reside anywhere within the UK in a location which is readily accessible to all normal transport networks.

Please note applications will close on the 9th of September.
