Minerals and metals are essential for modern living. Among other things, they enable farming, healthcare, communications, water and energy supply, transport, space technology and the construction of our cities.
Investments in natural resources do not always lead to positive social and economic outcomes for human wellbeing, our planet, or the prosperity of host communities and nations. This does not have to be the case; when mining and metals companies act responsibly, the extraction and management of natural resources can be transformative for the lives of employees, their families, local communities and entire nations.
Bringing together 27 mining and metals company members and over 35 national, regional and commodity association members, ICMM has a truly global reach, and uses this platform to strengthen the social and environmental performance of the mining and metals industry while building recognition of its contribution to local communities and society at large.
About this role:
We are looking for a passionate and experienced social practitioner with a strong background in social and economic development to lead ICMM's work on community resilience and skills training, to help lead work on mineral resource governance (in particular on tax), and support the delivery of ICMM's work on Indigenous Peoples and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I).
Leading ICMM's work on community resilience and skills training, you will bring your insight and experience in social and economic development to support ICMM's collaborative efforts to build the resilience of communities through skills-training partnerships that better enable communities to navigate transitions from climate change, automation and mine closure. Leading a project team of four colleagues and a communications partner, you will be responsible for the implementation of ICMM's Skills Initiative.
You will have the opportunity to:
Lead the design of ICMM's 15-year Initiative moving forward, including the completion and synthesis of a robust knowledge base of research and analysis and the delivery of a collaborative design process on which informed decisions can be made about activities to conduct in subsequent stages of the Initiative
Set targets - including supporting the implementation of a recently approved framework for measuring and reporting on socio-economic benefit activities - to demonstrate delivery of the programme
Lead activities to trial and refine approaches agreed for the next stage of the Initiative
Coordinate engagement and collaboration with a broad range of stakeholders and key delivery partners including the International Finance Corporation, World Bank, International Labour Organisation, non-mining businesses, national business and development associations, and potential funders
Continue to develop and deploy communication assets to support broad recognition of the Initiative with key stakeholders, thus enhancing ICMM's leadership position
Working within ICMM's matrix structure, you will have the opportunity to actively engage in other aspects of the broader ICMM work programme, applying your unique experience and expertise to strengthen the industry's contribution to the sustainable development agenda.
About you:
You will share ICMM's passion for sustainability and have 5+ years' experience working to increase the social and economic development contribution of business to communities and society through policy or practice-oriented work, ideally within a consultancy, company, government, civil society or association.
You have a good working knowledge of the global policy environment related to these areas. Ideally, you will have knowledge of the extractives industry and experience working in or with corporate business across the areas of enterprise development, skills training, tax, sustainability and/or international development.
You will also be adaptable, creative and a strategic thinker who can move from planning to implementation with ease. A strong team player and influencer, you will have excellent interpersonal, communication and engagement skills, with the ability to build, maintain and leverage relationships both internally and across multiple external stakeholder groups.
Have we piqued your interest?
ICMM's approach is anchored in collaboration, bringing together industry and broader stakeholders such as investors, suppliers, communities, Indigenous Peoples, academia, and civil society to achieve their vision of a safe, just and sustainable world, enabled by responsibly produced minerals and metals.
Apply below before Friday 11th March if you're motivated by the thought of helping ICMM continue to drive real, meaningful change in the metals and mining industry. If you have any questions, please contact Dan Bond at dan.bond@acre.com.
This role, and all roles at ICMM, are open to candidates from any and all geographic regions.
