L'Oréal USA has announced it has already reached carbon neutrality for scopes 1 and 2 emissions for all its US sites across 12 states, ahead of its 2025 target.
This feat includes the cosmetic company’s manufacturing and distribution facilities, administrative sites, and research and innovation sites, in line with the firm’s global sustainability commitment L'Oréal for the Future.
The commitment states that all L'Oréal operated sites worldwide must reach carbon neutrality by 2025, which means the US division has achieved the goal four years ahead of schedule.
L'Oréal USA, which is headquartered in New York City, has been advancing its renewable energy ambition since 2005, by improving energy efficiency and transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy.
Stéphane Rinderknech, President & CEO, L'Oréal USA, said: "L'Oréal's sustainability ambition is a transformational effort that has touched every department, becoming a source of pride, inspiration and education for all our 11,000 US employees.
"Our brands and products are some of the most recognizable in the world, and more than 2 out of every 3 products we sell in the United States are manufactured here. Our customers can be proud their products are made in facilities that use 100 percent renewable energy. While we are proud of these achievements, we know this is not enough to meet the moment we are in today and must push ourselves ever farther to meet the climate crisis head-on."
Isabel Vose, Senior Consultant US, from Acre said:“We commend L'Oréal USA for reaching their target four years ahead of schedule. It demonstrates that strong determination, effort and focus can produce impressive results to create a meaningful impact.
“There is always room for improvement with every company when setting environmental goals, but I would like to think L'Oréal USA has set a precedent when it comes to raising the bar for sustainability commitments, for the group as a whole but also for other companies to follow suit.”
L'Oréal USA’s strategy for reaching carbon neutrality for Scopes 1 and 2 emissions across its US footprint includes energy optimization, direct renewable energy projects, locally source renewable energy certificates and renewable natural gas.
The L'Oréal for the Future commitment was launched in June last year as the next phase of the company’s ambitious sustainability goals for 2030 and 2050. It set long-term goals to reduce all its greenhouse gas emissions (Scopes 1, 2 and 3) by a quarter by 2030 and aims to become a net zero company by 2050.
The targets were aligned with the Science Based Targets, which aim to limit global warming to 1.5°C, according to climate scientist recommendations, as set by the Paris Agreement.
L'Oréal is the only company in the world to have obtained a Triple 'A' rating from the CDP, for the fifth year running, for protecting the climate, managing water sustainably and fighting against deforestation.
