Over the past couple of years, I’ve found myself thinking hard about my career direction, my personal values and purpose and how much they have begun to mould together. It's been the first time I’ve ever considered; are my values and purpose fixed or do they change with time and circumstance?
Becoming a dad has been an enormous catalyst for reflection and change in my life – all of a sudden feeling genuinely happy at work became my number one priority, and exploring what was going to make me happy became my goal.
I went through a Discovery process with Acre which is essentially two 1-hour coaching sessions designed to empower those in business to make great decisions, to tune into their values and to engage positive change amongst their employees.
At a time where I was feeling like a bit of a lonely individual, the process really helped me to understand my ‘why’ and what’s in it for me to change my mindset. It got me thinking – I’ve always strived for progression at work but in only thinking about how to progress, had I begun to neglect growth?
I was in a situation where my working life and the person I was in that space did not match the person I wanted to be outside of work. The organisation I was working for at the time was great, but it just didn’t fit who I was and what I wanted.
So rather than stick it out, I made a bold decision to leave – moving on to the place that inspired me, Acre & Acre Frameworks.
If you’ve not heard of Acre Frameworks, the business is wholly passionate about delivering organisational culture change and embracing the non-technical approach that is essential to the success of the modern, purpose-driven professional; be that in safety, risk, sustainability, or any position in a business with a true purpose-led culture.
I am passionate about the industry I’ve worked in and loved for the last 10+ years – so naturally, I want to be part of the ‘new school’ culture swing that’s now taking hold. Joining a learning and talent development business enables me to uphold my values and assist in developing the wonderful group of professionals I am surrounded by with organisations that embrace and encourage excellence.
We facilitate the same Discovery process that I went through, utilising our unique behavioural assessment technology and our understanding of the types of people, skills and behaviours required to create impact. You can find out more about what we do here: www.acre.com/frameworks
What learnings can you take from my journey?
I’m not saying everyone should up-sticks and leave their job - far from it! But what I am saying, is that we can all benefit from some self-reflection from time to time.
I can speak first-hand to this approach; your values and motivations aren't fixed. The Discovery process that I undertook before I joined Acre helped me to define my purpose, and to ensure that I find growth alongside progression.
I would encourage professionals at all levels, whether you operate within safety like I did, or any other occupation, to challenge yourself around what motivates you, where your values lie and how the two fit into your day-to-day. If you aren’t sure where to start, or you’re curious to learn more about the Discovery process that I went on, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
