The Sustainable Biomass Program (SBP) is a certification system designed for woody biomass, mostly in the form of wood pellets and wood chips, used in industrial, large-scale energy production. SBP's vision is an economically, environmentally and socially sustainable woody biomass supply chain that contributes to a low carbon economy. SBP has developed a certification system to provide assurance that woody biomass is sourced from legal and sustainable sources.

Acre has been engaged to identify a Chair for the Sustainable Biomass Program Board who will represent a variety of interests and views, facilitate discussions and maximise the collective input of the individual members. The role of the Board of Directors (BoD) is to be responsible for overseeing the implementation of SBPs mission, vision, and governance, as well as setting the overall strategy, direction and budget.

The Board structure is a 3+3+3+1 model with 3 seats for biomass producers (possibly being represented by the associations AEBIOM, USIPA and WPAC), 3 seats for end-users, 3 seats for Public Interest Groups and 1 independent Chair of the Board (independent from the 3 stakeholder groups represented in the Board). Board members are nominated in a personal capacity and need to display attributes including - but not limited to - knowledge, expertise, integrity, and overall a positive perspective on SBP.

The primary responsibility of the independent Chair is to:

  • Prepare and chair at least four annual Board meetings;
  • Facilitate constructive and forward looking dialogue and decision taking in the Board;
  • Ensure that strategic and operative issues are dealt with by the Board in a comprehensive and timely/forward looking manner;
  • Ensure consideration of the interests of various stakeholders of SBP;
  • Represent SBP towards internal and external stakeholders, including media;
  • Counsel and support the CEO
You will be a strong mediator and communicator with a keen interest in the sustainability agenda.

In addition you will:

  • Be respected both professionally and personally by both NGOs and industry
  • Have a strong business as well as political understanding and knowledge of the European energy sector
  • Demonstrate strong process capabilities and the proven ability to reach compromises under difficult circumstances
  • Have experience in a C-level position in a major (international) organisation
  • Be independent from the 3 stakeholder groups in the BoD
  • Have an interest in and track record of working with multi stakeholder organisations in a multicultural environment
  • Have excellent communication skills in English
  • Be interested in certification systems, supply chains and sustainable development (preferable)
