Food and Agriculture specialist, WWF UK
“When I worked with David his involvement was the key factor is persuading a leading global dairy co-operative to start a sustainable dairy farming programme. He went the extra mile as a customer in commissioning a study on the business case for the supplier to improve its reputation through its farming sustainability performance. The supplier company then established a strong farming sustainability programme with its farmer members overseen by a board of external parties that included David as a customer, farmer members, scientists and the NGO I work for. For me it really showed at its best what motivation can be given to a supplier by someone working in a key customer company. It may also have played a role through that company in getting the whole country to play on its sustainability reputation. ”

“David has been chairing the AIM-PROGRESS Initiative on responsible sourcing for three years and he has brought outstanding leadership and mediation skills to this position. David is good at strategy as well as being action/results orientated. He is very good at chairing meetings – his sense of humour helps and can also roll up his sleeves when necessary. The membership of AIM-PROGRESS has doubled under his chairmanship and he was unanimously selected to be retained as chairman on a contracted basis when he left Diageo at the end of 2013. ”

A very positive and constructive person, he has always brought a practical focus to his work, looking to ensure the right people are engaged in what is happening to ensure the best outcome for all concerned. ”
Operational Excellence Director - Spirits & Wines
“I worked closely with David at Diageo, including mentoring him through his Cambridge sustainability programme. During his time in the role David initiated the sustainable Procurement programme which we continue to develop and implement today. David’s contribution ranged from creating our Supplier Code and crafting our first Sustainable Sourcing Guidelines for our agricultural suppliers, to supporting buyers in applying these codes to drive performance improvement. Of particular note was the collaborative and inclusive way in which he led the work on Sustainable Cream supply with our major supplier. ”
